LG Electronics (LG), one of the makers leading the OLED charge, has announced that it will unveil four new OLED TVs at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin.

Among these will be 65in and 55in 4K High Dynamic Range (HDR) OLED TVs (models 65/55EF9500 and 55EG9200) and a curved OLED TV (model 55EG9100).

LG says the EF9500 units feature the industry’s first flat 4K resolution OLED displays while the 55EG9200 and 55EG9100 measures just 4.8mm thick, slimmer than many a smart phone.

These additions will bring LG’s OLED family up to nine models, offering a range of resolutions and frame types.

OLED tech has certainly come a long way since its first demonstrations of, admittedly impressive looking, but tiny screens.

It seemed for a while as if the technology might find its true home on smaller wearable and hand-held products only and never graduate to the TV.

However lowering costs and most importantly the introduction of 4K has driven the market forward.

LG certainly sees OLED as the natural technology to really get the best from 4K with its deep blacks coupled to its ability to render the required light range at lower peak brightness.

While 4K increases the resolution quality of the picture being shown, LG is also offering HDR technology which increases the colours, contrast and ‘realism’.

The set’s ability to take advantage of this technology however, depends on the approach being taken up by programme and film makers and the industry deciding on a ‘standard’ for the technology.

LG is also keen to point out its OLED TVs allow consumers to view 4K content from both streaming content partners as well as external sources.

Transparent stands and very thin bezels are also included to add to the overall ‘look’ of the family made up of flat or curved options.

All of LG’s 4K OLED TVs feature webOS 2.0, the latest iteration of LG’s proprietary smart TV platform.

This latest version is designed to make navigating simpler, easier and more intuitive.

webOS 2.0 also reduces boot time and allows users or installers to personalise the launch bar menus.

In addition, LG’s 4K OLED TVs feature speakers developed in partnership with audio manufacturer Harman/Kardon to add a bit more grunt to the audio.

“Anyone who sees our newest TVs at this year’s IFA will walk away without a shred of doubt that HDR and OLED complement each other perfectly,” says Lee In-kyu, senior vice president and head of the TV and monitor division at the LG Home Entertainment Company. “Our expanded 4K OLED TV lineup will demonstrate to consumers that OLED is here to stay and that LG is committed to leading the next generation TV market.”

LG’s new 4K OLED TVs will be available starting at the end of August in Germany and the UK with the rollout to continue over the next several months in select markets.
