The third generation Nest is now available through Invision UK, bringing with it a slightly tweaked design and some huge new features.

Nest’s Learning Thermostat has been given a number of new upgrades, including some of those not seen on the US version.

These upgrades include a more discreet profile – the second generation Nest measured 1.26in thick, the new model sheds 0.05in for a slim 1.21in profile – as well as a larger, higher resolution screen; 2.08in and 480 x 480 to be exact.

Unlike the US model, which can control a furnace, the UK and Europe’s third generation Nest will now have control over the hot water as well as advanced compatibility with OpenTherm heating systems.

“Millions of Nest homes around the world have saved approximately four billion kilowatt hours of energy compared to what they would have used if they’d left their thermostats at a consistent temperature,” says Lionel Paillet, general manager of Europe for Nest.

“And today, with brand new software and hardware, our European customers can save even more whilst staying comfortable, thanks to remote hot water control and OpenTherm compatibility.

“And we are continuing to expand our presence in Europe – the 3rd generation Nest Thermostat will be available through thousands of retail locations, professional distributors and directly through Nest Pro installers and at a discount or at no cost at all through energy partners.”

Hot water functionality is exclusive to Europe, allowing users to adjust the hot water schedule from their phone or thermostat, boost from anywhere and auto-away works with their hot water tank to help save energy when no one’s home (after 2 days).

Advanced modulation with OpenTherm will also be exclusive to Europe.

Nest’s 3rd generation thermostat now uses OpenTherm to enable two-way communication between compatible boilers and Nest to work out the precise amount of gas to burn to reach or maintain the requested temperature, rather than simply turn the boiler on or off; all this is designed to save energy, increase comfort and prolong the life of the heating system.

Nest is working on its home automation credentials with its Works with Nest program, which includes partners such as RTI, Control4 and Crestron, alongside established consumer brands like Philips, Bosch and LG.
